Concrete Block Reinforced Soil Retaining Walls
Reinforced soil retaining walls use a reinforced bank of earth as the retaining structure. The earth wall is then faced with 300mm concrete lego blocks.
The bank is constructed in layers of earth with a geogrid laid between them. The geogrid reinforces the earth so it acts as a single mass.
The layers of reinforced earth are 600 mm. This fits in well with the dimensions of the blocks at 600mm.
Criblock Reinforced Soil Retaining Walls
High criblock walls being a gravity wall design require a lot of mass. The mass is greater at the bottom of the wall. One way to design a wall using less criblock and mass is to introduce an reinforced earth wall.
The reinforced soil wall reduces the loads on the criblock.
The benefits of the criblock wall remain the same. The face can be planted and treated in the same way as any other standard criblock wall.
The cribs can be made form timber, reinforced concrete and even plastic.
The geogrid is attached to the criblock by passing it through the criblock and loading it with stone
Gabion Basket Reinforced Soil Retaining Walls
Gabion basket reinforced soil walls are much the same as criblock. They use the same design principles of gravity and mass. The obvious difference is the face is made from gabion filled baskets rather than criblock.
The filling between the geogrid needs to be selected stone specified by the geotechnical engineer.
The overall feasibility of a reinforced earth wall is the existing material on site. If material needs to be bought in, it may become expensive.
