Reinforced Earth Retaining Walls
Concrete Block Reinforced Earth Retaining Walls
Reinforced earth retaining walls use a reinforced bank of earth as the retaining structure. The earth wall is then faced with 300mm concrete lego blocks.
The bank is constructed in layers of earth with a geogrid laid between them. The geogrid reinforces the earth so it acts as a single mass.
The layers of reinforced earth are 600 mm. This fits in well with the dimensions of the blocks at 600mm.
The geogrid we use is E’Grid. E’Grid reinforcement improves the bearing capacity and safety of the structure making savings on construction cost.
We selected E’Grid as our preferable geo mat due to its strength and competitive pricing for customers.
The design life of E’Grid and our blocks facing more than 120 years
Criblock Reinforced Earth Retaining Walls
High criblock walls being a gravity wall design require a lot of mass. The mass is greater at the bottom of the wall. One way to design a wall using less criblock and mass is to introduce an reinforced earth wall.
The reinforced earth wall reduces the loads on the criblock.
The benefits of the criblock wall remain the same. The face can be planted and treated in the same way as any other standard criblock wall.
The cribs can be made form timber, reinforced concrete and even plastic.
The geogrid is attached to the criblock by passing it through the criblock and loading it with stone
Gabion Basket Reinforced Earth Retaining Walls
Gabion basket reinforced earth walls are much the same as criblock. They use the same design principles of gravity and mass. The obvious difference is the face is made from gabion filled baskets rather than criblock.
The filling between the geogrid needs to be selected stone specified by the geotechnical engineer.
The overall feasibility of a reinforced earth wall is the existing material on site. If material needs to be bought in, it may become expensive.
A quality site investigation report is required for a full understanding of the soils and geography

Reinforced Earth Wall Design Service
The design of a retaining wall requires knowledge of the retaining material, the water table, the ground bearing capacity and any site constraints. The design requires a ground investigation and a structural engineer to ensure the design is fit for purpose.
We offer a full design service from carrying out the ground investigation to final working drawings. Complete our contact form or call us on 07896 246 224 and we will support you and your project.
