Geoweb® retaining wall introduction

Geoweb® retaining walls are grass and plant covered in order to blend into the environment.

The Geoweb® mat is very light, and the wall can be built using a local contractor and even DIY with some basic training.

Geoweb® retaining walls are ideal when the budget is low and can be built in gardens, landscaping, and large civil engineering projects.

A Geoweb® retaining wall is an open cell plastic mat filled with earth to create a gravity retaining wall. Geoweb® walls can be built using a gravity design to 1m. After 1m, the design changes to a soil-reinforced design.

Vegetation solution

The system creates an environment where plants and grasses grow within the retaining wall surface.

The vegetation system helps collect stormwater runoff. Soil-filled front cells allow grasses to grow and establish, creating a green wall.

Geoweb® can be laid on well-consolidated ground.

Soil is excavated from behind the wall to a width defined by the design.

A geogrid is placed under every 3/4 course. The geogrid strength and length will be designed using the soil type and wall height.

The geogrid stops the soil from slipping and acts as a single mass. The soil mass and geometry prevent the wall from overturning.

The design table above has been created to allow us to build budget costs. The designs are Indicative for geoweb retaining walls based upon a base material with allowable bearing pressure of >200kPa.

The design uses well-graded, granular backfill with the back of the wall having drainage to relieve hydrostatic pressure.

All indicative information presented in this table is based upon assumed loading and ground conditions. This table is for guidance purposes only and will be subject to change following a detailed, site-specific design developed by an approved structural engineer.

    How do you design a geoweb retaining wall?

    The design of  Geoweb retaining walls depends on the height of the wall. Walls below 800mm can be built just using the geoweb units in a gravity design. Walls above 800mm require a reinforced soil structure tied into the geoweb.

    What is soil reinforcement?
    Soil reinforcement is building up the soil behind the Geoweb retaining wall in layers. Soil is laid over a geogrid mat.

    The layers of geogrid and soil create a sandwich that stops the soil from shearing, and the soil acts as a single mass.

    Geoweb retaining walls with soil reinforcement is an economical solution.

    What is geogrid?
    Geogrid is a polymer mesh that is used to reinforce soil. Soil is laid over the geogrid and compacted in layers. The layer thickness will depend on the design but usually is between 300mm to 600mm. The length of the geogrid is also determined by the design but a rule of thumb method is 80% of the wall height.

    The layers of geogrid and soil create a sandwich that stops the soil from shearing, and the soil acts as a single mass.
